back pain

How to deal with severe spinal pain?

The human body is highly complex and stimuli sensitive. Even the lightest touch, a little sting, and a briefly hot touch lead to a reaction. It is not always easy to understand what leads to a certain way the body behaves.

There are so many ways in which the body reacts to different circumstances, to tell that something is wrong. It could be a rash, red skin, blisters, swelling, scars, pain, etc.

Pain– something which the entire population of the earth has experienced more than once in their lifespan. Pain can be due to overexertion, a result of some accident, or sometimes, because of a reason which we cannot decipher.

In times of severe spinal pain, we resort to a doctor immediately. In most cases, we ignore light jabs of pain thinking it would fade away which causes the pain to intensify and makes the cure a bit more difficult and time-consuming, but more importantly, it makes you miserable.

SEVERE SPINAL PAIN

An important part of the human body frame, the part which supports the entire body and helps us stand and maintain a proper stature is the SPINE.

So, when pain is encountered in the spine, it can ignite worry in a person for multiple reasons.

The human spine is made up of discs, spinal cord, vertebrae, ligaments, and muscles. It is split into four sections- Cervical (neck area), Lumbar (lower back), Sacral (tailbone area), and Thoracic (upper and mid-back).

Severe spinal pain can lead to many miserable days of lost opportunities and can inflict a lot of stress upon its patients. If not treated properly, it may fade away with time but it recurs with a higher intensity making it grimmer to deal with the pain.

Causes of severe spinal pain

  • The most common causes of pain in the lower back are strains and sprains in the Lumbar muscle.
  • Cervical pain is infamous for the misery it causes to the person suffering from it. It leads to a long pause in daily life.
  • Thoracic muscle is also a site of pain, but its frequency and probability are lesser.
  • Slipped disc, sciatica, backbone fracture, arthritis of backbone, etc., are other common causes of back & neck pain.
  • Because of the load-bearing function and role in fluidity, ease of movement, and flexibility, the Cervical, and Lumbar spine are prone to strain and sprain.
These strains and sprains are caused due to abnormal stretch in the muscle fibers and ligaments which leads to the inflammation of the soft tissues which further causes severe muscle pains and spasms.
  • Albeit Cervical and Lumbar pains can be very draining, surgical attention is not required.
  • If an injury or an accident is involved, or if the pain branches into other parts of the body like the limbs or the rib cage area, then surgical attention may be required.

Dealing with severe spinal pain

We all dream of a problem-free and pain-free body. Nobody wants to deal with pain, but certain situations are irrevocable and cannot be stopped.

In situations of severe pain, when it becomes unbearable, follow the below steps to relieve the misery:

  1. Find a professional specialist and renowned professional to help with the proper diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Try to maintain a proper posture with the back straight and avoid slouching while sitting.
  3. Remember, inclining the body relieves the pain only for a short time, returning with a higher intensity.
  4. Adjust the spine, neck, and head at all times.
  5. Avoid lifting any heavy items and kids unless it is absolutely necessary. Lifting weights highly contribute to the pain and can even lead you to immobility and bed rest.
  6. If lifting something is unavoidable, be cautious and lift it accurately.
  7. Obesity causes strain to the body and adds to the pain.
  8. Try to maintain a balanced diet to avoid more strain because of added weight to the body
  9. Do light yoga and exercise to keep the body fit and maintain its mobility. It helps in sustaining the stretch on the muscles.
  10. Surprisingly, smoking also increases the risk of lower back pain. So, quit smoking.
  11. Resort to physiotherapy if needed but only after consultation from a knowledgeable professional.
  12. Ice packs and hot compress bags can provide relief for a short but desperate span of time.
  13. Take a pain killer for instant pain relief at times of distressing need.
  14. Make sure to consult your doctor before taking any steps for pain relief, and especially before taking medicines.
  15. If pain is not going away with all the above measures, more serious causes like a slipped disc, nerve compression, sciatica, backbone fracture must be ruled out with the help of any specialist doctor of the spine.

Prevention for severe spinal pain

  1. Exercise- proper exercise helps in keeping a person in shape. It is also necessary to maintain mobility and fluidity of the body.
  2. Sleep sideways- avoid sleeping on your back to not add stress to your back. Use a pillow under the lower abdomen while sleeping on your stomach. Use a proper mattress and pillow to avoid stress on the back. Also, make sure to get a good and proper rest and sleep to maintain good health.
  3. Avoid stress- stress has a negative impact on the entire body. It causes the muscles to tense, and when this becomes a constant occurrence, it causes back pain. Try to engage in activities that will relieve stress.
  4. Maintain weight- Being overweight- especially around the stomach area- adds a lot of strain to the lower back and can be a persistent cause of prevalent back pain. Try maintaining a healthy diet to avoid this and to live a healthy life
  5. Maintain posture- Try not to slouch in your seats while sitting. Slumping over and sitting in a bent or inclined position affects the back slowly and causes damage to the body more than we realize. So, sit and stand straight and maintain a proper posture.
